Back in 1829, the stretch of two-story buildings along the northern half of Washington Mews was built to house horses and carriages for the posh residents of Washington Square North. Come 1916, when horses were out and cars were in, the stables were transformed into studios for artists, perhaps most notably Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney who lived at 58-60 Washington Mews.

Some hundred years later, the Mews is still just as charming as ever. And while NYU does own most of the buildings now, there are still a few privately owned homes peppered along the short cobblestone street.
