In this, the era of Ozempic, let us all take pride in the fact that New Yorkers still have quite the appetite, and a line-bearing love for that most classic culinary cheat meal, the burger.
Well, at least downtown does...
If you've happened to stroll past Houston and MacDougal anytime in the past month and a half, you've no doubt found yourself wondering what all the commotion's about at new kid on the block, Hamburger America.
Any evening the overly simple luncheonette style joint is packed to the brim, with foodies and hungry laypeople alike pushed up against the windows, desperate to snag a seat at the counter and try one of "Burger Scholar" George Motz's fresh ground chuck creations.
It's the Classic Smash Burger, available as a single or double, that gets the most love, served on a toasted bun with mustard, diced onion, dill pickle and cheese - so heavily hyped everyone from Michael Bloomberg and Christy Turlington have popped by to check it out.
Across town on the Lower East Side, another burger spot is making a smash of a splash. Beloved pop-up Gotham Burger Social Club has put down roots on Essex and Rivington, where their triple decker Beastie Boy is getting customers all hot and bothered. Jalapeños, pickles, and a kaleidoscope of ketchup, mustard and special sauce.
... Curious which will most strike your fancy?
