The Quiksilver Pro surfing contest made the bold move to Long Beach, and this time around planned the event be more like a surf festival, with concerts by bands like the Flaming Lips, Interpol and Matt and Kim, plus skate and BMX competitions. The city of Long Beach was expecting over 200,000 to turn out for the the first weekend alone. But since Hurricane Irene hit and caused significant damage to the coast, the music and festival portion was completely canceled. So what's left to actually focus on? The hot surfers!
Well, there's the surfing, of course. Long Beach was picked to represent the first ever elite contest on America’s East Coast, but also boasts the richest prize-purse in surfing history of $1,000,000. The "holding period" (a period of time in which surfer wait for the best waves to hit for the competition) began on Monday, and just after Round One of the competition there are already been some surprise main contenders - and even if you don't know a lick about surfing they are all easy on the eyes...
