2. RIP Manic Pixie Dream Girl
Sorry, Zooey, your quirks (and bangs) (and doe eyes) won't save you now. After years of feminist arguments and controversial film fodder surrounding the term "Manic Pixie Dream Girl," even the coiner of the phrase is sick of it. On Tuesday, film critic Nathan Rabin wrote a piece for Salon apologizing for naming the trope which has by now become such a major part of popular culture. When one thinks MPDG, visions of countless whimsical heroines come to mind, swirling, and twirling, and tambourine playing. But maybe that's the problem. While we can see why Rabin originally tried to point out a sexist cliché he noticed in a lot of films, the inherent contempt behind the idea of MPDGs is misogynist in itself. So he officially has called for the death of the “Patriarchal Lie” that is the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Whether or not that puts you out of business, Zooey, only time will tell.
