Ouch
I'm gonna preface this by saying this was not a first date (I hope.)
In college I worked at a pizza/pasta joint in a very small college town. Occasionally we had large parties, and I usually got them. Had a group of maybe 15, all people in their 20s. Beers, pizzas, everything was fine.
Until one man took me aside and told me he was going to propose to his girlfriend, and that's why all his friends were there. This dude wanted me to quiet the whole joint (if I remember right we were packed because there was a football game and we were one of the few places to eat after.)
I very nicely said that I was not able to do that and went back to working.
So this dude, THIS DUDE, does it himself a few minutes later, bringing this poor girl out from the back banquet room into the main dining room, tries to get the restaurant quiet, and goes down on one knee.
Girl BOLTS out of the joint. Just fucking hoofs it. And by this point the entire restaurant is watching, including the 20 plus people waiting for a table. He runs after her after being stunned for a few seconds.
Neither of them had paid, is the problem. The friends picked up the tab and left as quickly as they could, apologizing for making a scene.
So the moral is don't propose to someone in a pizza joint at the mall in front of strangers.
