Kiev, Ukraine

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine but is still vastly overlooked and underappreciated. The city is bisected by the Dnieper River and is known for secular monuments, religious architecture, and several history museums. A monastery and pilgrimage site, the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, is a huge attraction to anyone who visits. The gold-domed churches are a site that can't be missed. There are also tours of the catacombs which house the remains of Orthodox monks as well as gold objects from Scythian times. Spooky.
