Cannes Opening Day Roundup

by TIFFANY ETESSAMI · May 13, 2010

The chicest film festival officially kicked off yesterday. As is tradition, the world's biggest stars have jetted off to Cannes with their A-game and haute couture gowns in tow.-

The paparazzi were hounding celebs before the festival even began. They caught up with Eva Longoria at the Nice airport as she made her way to her hotel, and the petite actress was more than happy to stop for a few pictures.

2010's judging panel features an eccentric group of people, but no one can beat the genial lunacy of this year's president of the jury, Tim Burton. Other judges include Italian actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Kate Beckinsale and Benicio del Toro (who pulled faces while walking down the carpet - you're at Cannes, Benicio! Not the VMAs!).

Meanwhile, the glamorous Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe attended a photo call for their epic movie, Robin Hood, which opened the festival.

The day's big premiere of Robin Hood brought out celebs in gowns fit for the Oscars. Kate Beckinsale and Eva Longoria looked elegant in extravagant Marchesa and Pucci gowns, respectively. Salma Hayek made a more subtle statement in burgundy Gucci, while Cate Blanchett paid tribute to her late friend by wearing Alexander McQueen.

Kate Beckinsale and Cuba Gooding Jr. attended the after party for the film. So far it looks like Cannes is off to a busy and awesome start!
