Why a movie about teenagers? What’s so interesting about this demographic? Matt Wolf: Teenagers really are the people who pioneer new styles, new ideas – and they’re the future. So even though our film takes place in the past, it’s very much about the future. That’s why adults dump all their hopes and fears on young people. That’s also why they try to control them. I’m interested in teenagers who are struggling to be treated like equals and carve our a space for themselves. [Adam Horovitz, Matt Wolf, Kathleen Hanna] Do you have any teenage memories you’d like to share? Anything crazy? MW: Nothing crazy, just being kind of dreamy. And I think that dreaminess comes across in the film, too. What did you discover about teenagers in working on this film? MW: What’s fascinating is just looking at archival footage and old imagery of teenagers from the past and seeing how much they have in common with teenagers today.
