Sometimes, as we all know too well, the world is f*cked up and unfair, and even the judicial system could fail us. Today, after a tumultuous battle with Sony and Dr. Luke, Kesha and her entire case got thrown out of court.
According to TMZ, a New York state judge has essentially rejected all of the singer's claims in her attempt to get out of her "slave" contract with her record company, including her allegations of rape and hate crimes by Dr. Luke. The judge - who is a 'he', but we digress - stuck on the side of Sony, saying that she was being unreasonable. Unreasonable in the face of sexual and mental abuse? OK.
"Although [Luke's] alleged actions were directed to Kesha, who is female, [her claims] do no allege that [Luke] harbored animus toward women or was motivated by gender animus when he allegedly behaved violently toward Kesha."
Kesha also made a public statement via Instagram revealing that she was indeed offered her freedom from the company IF she publicly apologized and denied her rape allegations. Instead, she stuck with the truth and (unfortunately) placed her trust in the courts.
To say that this is a scary precedent would be an understatement. What does it mean for ALL women, let alone women in showbiz, where this type of abusive behavior is all too common? Despite what any judge says, we're standing on the side of Kesha. Hopefully this makes a difference.
