Style Entrepreneur: Iris Apfel
At 91 years young, Iris Apfel - the rare bird of fashion in the big round glasses - has established herself as an ever eccentric and always energetic style entrepreneur. And the onetime
WWD writer, fabrics manufacturing entrepreneur, and inspiration for a MAC makeup line isn't slowing down. You can find her on HSN selling her wares, lecture hopping in NYC, and (we're really excited about this one) in an
upcoming documentary biopic. Here's some Apfel inspiration:
“I’m a geriatric starlet, my dear, don’t you know.... All of a sudden, I’m hot; I’m cool; I have a ‘fan base.’ ”
"Coco Chanel once said that what makes a woman look old is trying desperately to look young. Why should one be ashamed to be 84? Why do you have to say that you're 52? Nobody's going to believe you anyway, so why be such a fool? It's nice that you got to be so old. It's a blessing."
And in a collision of worlds that we had to Google just to make sure we didn't dream up, Tavi and Iris shared the stage this summer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for "Good Taste/Bad Taste: The Evolution of Contemporaty Chic" - a talk about personal style for the museum's Costume Institute.
