Julie Nixon Eisenhower
Father: Richard Nixon, 37th President
Years in White House: 1969-1974
S.S. Code Name: Sunbonnet
Married to the grandson of Dwight D. Eisenhower just a month before her father took office (so no Rose Garden for
her), Tricia's younger sister, Julie Nixon, connected two branches of American royalty. In addition, she was only 20 years old when she became First Daughter, but she took the role very seriously -- campaigning for national issues, leading White House tours, and assuming many of the responsibilities usually associated with the First Lady. Out of all the members of President Nixon's family, it was Julie who was the most vocal in his defense during Watergate, prompting journalist Nora Ephron to write:
"In the months since the Watergate hearings began, she has become her father's ... First Lady in practice if not in fact."
While a First Daughter, Julie became Assistant Managing Editor of the
Saturday Evening Post, and wrote a book about her father,
Eyes on Nixon. She continued to write after White House life, penning a book on her mother, Pat Nixon, and co-authoring a biography of Dwight D. Eisenhower with her husband. Despite her family ties to Republican Presidents, she endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 election.
