Volcano Boarding: Leon, Nicaragua
Leon is surrounded by a number of volcanoes, many of them still active. One of these, Cerro Negro (Black Ridge for those who do not speak Spanish), has recently become very popular on the backpacker trail as a place where anyone can climb to the top and descend on a small wooden board at breakneck speeds. In other words, "volcano boarding."
Cerro Negro is the youngest volcano in Central America as well as one of the most active. It last erupted in 1999 and many say it is now overdue to erupt again. This heightens the danger factor for all thrill seekers, and creates a fine black ash, the fresh powder of volcano boarding. You will have to hike up 1000 feet to reach the top, but the ride down will be worth it.
