Hollywood heavyweight Mel Gibson made a rare appearance to present the prestigious Palme d’Or award which went to Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake, starring Cillian Murphy. The English film director gave a speech in French which was well-received by the audience, despite the clear English accent that accompanied it. He then gave the same speech in English - a speech which he used to highlight the social inequalities that are apparent in Europe at the moment. It was a speech that received much cheer, and was a lovely close to the awards ceremony.
