Musical Beginnings
-The small town native started writing songs when she was "13 or 14" but first discovered her love of singing and performing when she was five, after following her friend into a drama group.
-Although she considers herself "
the quieter one" in her large, loud family, Lorde enjoys the moments on stage when she gets to be her alter-ego.
"Performing is something I have to switch on. I've heard I get real sassy onstage, which I'm not in real life! It's fun to be that person for an hour a night."
-In 2009, her friend's father sent Universal A&R scout Scott Maclachlan videos of Lorde performing covers at her school's talent show. Maclachlan was apparently so impressed, he signed her to Universal Records and set her up with their songwriters within a year.
-While we all know by now that she'll never be a royal (unless you consider the music industry, of which you can call her "Queen Bee"), her famous stage name is curiously regal. So how'd she
think it up?
"I came up with the name Lorde after looking through aristocratic titles. 'Lord' is a supermasculine word, so I added an 'e' to make it feminine."
