A Housing Shortage

One of the root causes of the lack of seasonal workers is undoubtedly the shortage of affordable housing. More and more Manhattanites escaped to the East End last year, causing real estate scarcity that has upended the usual market. Restaurant owners who source housing for their summertime staff, for example, are being faced with a decimated rental market. "There’s very little affordable housing for the backbone of the restaurant: the bussers, the dishwashers, the line cooks," one chef told Bloomberg in May. A year-long suspension of overseas work visas, launched by President Trump at the start of the pandemic, has also contributed to the labor shortage, while the cost of living and travel to and from the outskirts of Long Island has simply made Hamptons jobs unappealing.

For the foreseeable future, that means even the wealthiest of Hamptonites are going to have to wait for service - or roll up their sleeves and start doing things themselves.
