Welcome to 2021, a year in which we truly hope that socialite baby name battles are the weirdest things we'll have to talk about (we doubt it, but let us dream).
Montauk-based Aussie personality Sasha Benz, known for her boutiques Wyld Blue and Wyld Black (which may or may not have been peddling knockoff Chanel wares this summer), her blog "All My Friends Are Models," and as the former Creative Director of local hot spot The Surf Lodge, apparently sparked rumors of a feud with, as it happens, one of those model friends and fellow Aussie, Jessica Hart, after the latter stole her baby name. In a twist that would only happen between two women of their social set, the baby name in question is, literally, "Baby."
You see, Jessica Hart, of Victoria's Secret fame, and her NASCAR driver fiancé, James Kirkham, welcomed their first child this past November. Her name? "Baby-Rae Kirkham, but we just call her Baby," Hart told People.
She explained, "I first heard it in the movie Dirty Dancing and always thought I’d love to name my daughter Baby. I was hesitant to ask James about it at first but we just weren’t landing on a name. Finally, probably a month before she was born, I said what about Baby, and he said, ‘Oh my gosh, I love it.’ It’s felt right ever since."
However, her friend Sasha Benz also has a daughter, who is in fact nearly three years old, and her name is Baybi. Baybi Blue Benz, to be exact.
So it's really no surprise that Mama Benz was miffed.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, "Sasha was devastated that her close friend would copy her daughter's 'unique' name, especially after she'd gone to her for name ideas."
Their source, an alleged mutual friend, also added that "Benz was blindsided when a week before Hart gave birth she told [her]: 'We are calling her Baby, but don't worry - it's spelt differently!'"
While that report claims the pair have hardly spoken since, the Daily Mail spoke with Benz herself, who said, "Of course Jess and I are still friends. We chatted it out a few weeks back, and I am happy she has a name she loves for her beautiful girl."
Since Patrick Swayze is sadly not around to give us the last word, we'd consider this a case closed. At least until anybody attempts to put either of those babies (/baybies?) in a corner. God help us then.
