Where To 'Gram: VSOP Art + Design Projects

Ask Jonathan Weiskopf about the concept behind VSOP Projects, and he's well-prepared with the answer; you can tell he's spent a long time thinking about it.

"A huge part of what goes wrong for me in the experience of art in museums and galleries is that you do not get a sense of how the thing is going to behave at home," he says. Which is why VSOP is set up like a somewhat familiar space. The first room highlights the main exhibition on show, currently displaying works by British furniture maker Katie Walker and artist Mea Duke, while the next is a colorful splash of design and decor that feels like somebody's living room. Head upstairs for more, and take in video installations, trippy linen paintings, and a moving video installation by filmmakers Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck.

Everything is available for purchase and ready to touch and sit on - including a playful alligator chair and squishy hand-painted ottomans by Naomi Clark. The immersive experience completely removes the snooty mood of traditional galleries, making everything more accessible to everyone from the casual buyer to the chin-stroking art snob. For now, VSOP stands for "Very Special One-Time Performance," but Jonathan says the meaning of the acronym will change with each new show. Just one more detail that makes this place a quirky haven for creatives.
