[All photos by Andreas Branch for PMc] On Saturday afternoon, art lovers and aficionados gathered at REDCAT in downtown L.A. for a celebration of artist and L.A. native, Mark Bradford and his new book Merchant Posters. Guests attended a discussion between Bradford and Hammer Museum Chief Curator Douglas Fogle, followed by signing of the book where they mingled and chatted about the finer things life.
Bradford's art consists of imagery and items collected, such as signs and posters, around urban L.A. which he incorporates into his collage-painting hybrids. He scavenges for the items uses around lower-income areas of the city uses their language and messages and manipulates them for his dense and heavily textured pieces. Bradford has certainly designated himself as an L.A. artist, as it the city is both literally and figuratively reflected in his art.
