When you think of the world’s fashion capitals, Milan is sure to make the list. It’s stylish, modern, cosmopolitan… it’s a lot of things that you won’t find in the more traditional cities of Italy, which makes it a very different kind of holiday destination. In fact, as a resident New Yorker, I went to Italy a dozen times before finally making it to Milan for that very reason. If I live in a metropolitan mecca, why travel to another one when I could visit the rolling hills of Tuscany or the crystal coastline of the Amalfi? But as a professional personal stylist, I thought it was high time that I check out the competition this year, and I was so glad that I did.

Like New York, Milan is not a city that you want to do on the cheap. Of course there are plenty of budget restaurants and hotels available, but I would save those for the countryside where you can find beautiful and unique places without spending much. Like New York, Paris or even San Francisco–if you have the opportunity to stay in one of Milan’s historic old hotels I personally think it’s worth the splurge. Same goes for dining, and just keep that credit card out of your pocket because great shopping is… everywhere.
