Francesca Woodman
Cool-girl photographer of your mama's generation, Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) worked to create a functional, mobile image of the female form largely through self-portraiture. Woodman was a victim of the patriarchal institution that allowed very little of her work to be shown in her lifetime, but her photography has recently been the subject of posthumous solo exhibits at all the old-boys clubs (MoMA SF, the Guggenheim, etc.). Though not the first, Woodman's legacy helped to open a foothold for female artists to follow, elevating mirrors, birds, and nips back to their classical era glory.
