Sofia Coppola

True, her dreamy films speak primarily to the rich, listless, and white, but they also help to further define the limitations put on women by the societal expectation that they remain delicate and the resulting crimes and tragedies. Through her largely female casts and distinctively feminine narratives, Sofia Coppola incorporates the female aesthetic art of keeping home into the more traditionally male film industry. Though her detached heroines often fail to subvert the pressures put against them, they introduce a narrative ignored by action films and thrillers: the young woman dissatisfied with her place as socialite, daughter, wife.
