Raymond Pettibon, Are Your Motives Pure? Surfers 1987-2012
Like most Americans looking in on a counterculture, Raymond Pettibon elevates the image of the "surfer" to an almost metaphor, thanks to the pop cultural mythology surrounding the icon. More representative than realistic, the LA-based artist's surfer series features his famous DIY drawing style combined with poetic blurbs in order to reveal the universal humanity of a tiny, lonely figure facing the world's waves head-on.
