Michal Chelbin, "Sailboats and Swans"
Over the past six years, artist Michal Chelbin has been touring prisons in the Ukraine and Russia, in order to photograph its inmates. The resulting exhibition, “Sailboats and Swans,” is a rare glimpse into these iron-gated communities, a collection of portraits that addresses topics of surveillance and the tension between reality and fantasy.
The oddly bucolic title refers to the colorful wallpaper and murals that often adorned these prison walls, clashing with the stark surroundings.
