Edo Pop at Japan Society
Although you might not know Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) by name, you are probably familiar with his Japanese woodblock prints. Hokusai’s depictions of Mount Fuji and the waves of Kanagawa are forever associated with Japanese art and culture. These striking images featuring bold colors and detail-heavy depictions of the human body and nature, have transcended Eastern art and made their way into the works of pop culture and graphic design, and more than a few tattoos.
In
Edo Pop, the Japan Society exhibits the works of Hokusai and other Japanese woodblock masters alongside the works of contemporary Japanese artists who have been influenced by their works. A must see for anyone that appreciates the ability to compose images that capture movement and fluidity while remaining still on the page.
Date: March 9th through June 9th.
