Get into the Black Box
What’s more hip[ster] in New York, or anywhere really, than being first to see the next big thing? This city didn’t get its rep for nurturing some of the world’s best art for nothing. Art emerges on the sides of buildings and can and has turned the empty loft above your apartment into the next black box theater.
Impress your artsy (read: pretentious) date by taking them to one of New York’s non-profit multidisciplinary performance spaces that mounts various experimental art forms and support your city’s up and coming artists.
Places to try: TheaterLab, The Tank, Dixon Place, St Marks Church
Pros include: intimate seating, low-ticket prices, and any kind of art under the sun from puppetry to film to ballet. Nothing says culture like knowing all about the new Reggie Watt’s new work. It’s a win all around.
