NYC's Most Popular "Art Museum" Makes Us Worry About The State Of Culture

by Stephanie Maida · November 14, 2022

There's no questioning the fact that New York City is home to some of the most impressive art collections in the world. Our cultural landscape is filled with landmarks like the Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art. All internationally celebrated, iconic institutions that house masterworks spanning centuries.

When it comes to naming NYC's best of the bunch, one would imagine stiff competition among the aforementioned. But according to data analyzed by SINGULART, the city's most popular "art museum" - at least according to social media - isn't one with a billion-dollar endowment or priceless masterpieces on its walls.

It is, instead, the Museum of Ice Cream.

Yes, the made-for-Instagram gimmick featuring a sprinkle pool and "immersive" ice cream-themed photo ops beat out destinations like the Met and MoMA in terms of Instagram and TikTok posts and hashtags, earning a total of 72,422,000 views. Comparatively, the second most popular museum, the Met, pulled in 30,676,000 posts and views.

If this is the current state of culture in New York, truly, c'est tragique.

We mean, even the West Coast has their shit together - the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was ranked the top spot in the country with over 942 million views across social media.

Come on New Yorkers, do we really want LA influencers to consider themselves more cultured than we are? It's time to hit the real museum circuit and get your hashtags going.
