Sold And Sold Again
In 1946 the Brooks family sold Brooks Brothers to Julius Garfinckel and Company which was acquired by Allied Stores in 1981 which was acquired by Federated Departments Stores in 1988 who spun off Brooks Brothers in a sale to the British Department store Marks & Spencer’s. Brooks Brothers followed many other American garment makers as their factories moved from New York City and Paterson, New Jersey to North Carolina with a portion being manufactured in East Asia while embarking on marketing campaigns promoting “Made in America.” In 2007, Brooks Brothers bought and expanded a suit factory in Haverhill, Massachusetts near where the first textile mills in the United States started the industrial revolution. On July 6th, Brooks Brothers announced all 400 employees of the Haverhill, factory would be laid off.
