The Secret "Brand Tax"
Brandless works by getting rid of the secret "brand tax", which is the amount consumers pay because brand names are marked up to cover the costs of distribution, warehousing and retail space. Without a brand name, a retail space, or distribution cost, Brandless can afford to sell for $3. The anti-consumer culture company has raised more than $50 million in venture capital from New Enterprise Associates, Redpoint Ventures and others. The food and homegoods product industry is worth 2 trillion dollars, so trying to make a dent in it is not easy.
