Even though mom is sure to be the one person who'll love anything you get her for the holidays (she still has your macaroni art framed), shopping for her is always the hardest. You want to find something truly special and unique, just like her. Since Etsy is the go-to for one-of-a-kind finds, we decided to consult their resident trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson (who will be appearing in a new NBC Series, Making It, alongside Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman) to help.

Etsy is the destination for all that is special and unique this holiday season, and personalization is one of the biggest trends I’m seeing across all categories. And what better way to spoil mom, than with a handmade or customized gift? Whether it’s jewelry, candles, mugs, or clothing, shoppers are looking for gifts that not only bring joy to their recipients, but also show the thoughtfulness and love that was put into finding them.

One of my favorite picks for mom this year is the custom family portrait by Jordan Grace Owens, because it’s a truly one-of-a-kind gift that expresses who your family is – you can even choose what each person is wearing so that mom is decked out in her signature look.

In a recent survey from Etsy, we found that more than one third of shoppers who purchase customized or personalized gifts online reportedly feel happy when giving these gifts to others, and more than half feel thoughtful. Compare that to only 18% of people who feel happy and 19% of people who feel thoughtful when gifting expensive brand name items. In other words, we may think that luxury or expensive gifts are what show someone you care, but spending a little extra time and effort to purchase something unique that expresses who someone is, goes a long way.
