Wild Salmon
What: Wild salmon live in both fresh and saltwater during different periods of their life cycle. They spend 3-4 years in the ocean before swimming hundreds of miles upstream to return to the same creek in which they were born. In contrast, farm-raised fish are raised in containment until they reach commercial size and are sold. There are often claims of environmental damage and speculation that farmed fish are raised on a diet filled with contaminants and pesticides which are then consumed by humans.
Why we love it: The fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids (increasing heart health while decreasing the risk of disorders like Alzheimer's), protein, Vitamin A, D, B, B6, and E along with calcium, iron, magnesium, and phosphorous. In addition, wild salmon has half the overall fat content, less sodium, and higher levels of zinc and potassium of farm-raised fish.
How to eat it: Broiled, baked, pan-seared, poached, and grilled. Try adding a few lemon slices, a drizzle of olive oil, and dash of pepper for optimal taste.
