It's More Expensive Than You'd Expect

Unsurprisingly, you've got to have a lot of dough to "rough it." As one couple, based in Sweden, told Insider, "Buying a van is like gambling. You never know if you're going to get something that is good or not." They spent upwards of $12,600 to purchase a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van with another $7,000 set aside for renovations. In the midst of the conversion process, with unforeseen repairs thrown in, they frequently ran out of money. In the end, they spent $14,000 on the conversion alone.

"For us, that was extremely expensive. Money-wise, it has been a struggle trying to tie all of this together. Building a van is so expensive."
