2. Charles Chaplin
Celebrated as a great pioneer of early cinema, Charlie Chaplin was famous for his work both on and off the camera. Chaplin got his start working on the stage as a youth in London, and was working for Keystone Studios in the United States in his early 20s.
It was in America that Chaplin developed his now distinctive Tramp persona (with the bowler and mustache). He became immensely popular, and directed over 70 films over the course of his life, including
City Lights,
Modern Times, and
The Great Dictator.
