The Blind Barber
Barber shops were once the heart of the community; it was a place not just to get haircuts, but to also chit chat, mingle, and commerce ideas. On the northeast corner of Tompkins Square Park is a barber shop, where you'll walk past clients in seats trimming their beards and go through a heavy door. There you will come across a clandestine bar serving appropriately named drinks like the Velvet Underground and the Smoke & Dagger. The private entrance and cozy decor may take you back a century, but you should make sure to come in early as it gets pretty crowded.
