In 1973, Hilly Krystal took over a former biker bar in the East Village and made it CBGB. His inital intentions (CBGB actually stands for Country, Bluegrass, and Blues) weren't exactly fulfilled. In fact, this spot became a punk and new wave hub. Acts like Blondie, Patti Smith, and The Talking Heads gave early career shows in this dingy hall during the 80's. And CBGB tenaciously kept its doors open until its final concert when Patti Smith played just before it closed its doors in 2006.
