Personally I am of the ilk that New York City is timeless and a full bounce-back is all but inevitable. The city will get younger, costs of living will go down, Manhattan may even get its edge back. Although there will be a culling of businesses and concepts that were treading water before the pandemic, creativity can never be suppressed, and the most creative and forward-thinking operators will always have their next great concept teed up and ready for liftoff.

In many ways I think Nightlife’s next chapter will be defined by pushing boundaries. When the clubs reopen proper it will have been over a year since people have stepped foot inside. What has changed? It’s 2021 and the whole world has leaned into inclusivity, and yet Nightlife is the one sector where exclusivity is a measure of success. Seems like a pretty dated concept to me.

To the next generation of great Nightlife operators in New York City, whoever they may be, let their offerings be genuine and come from the heart. Create something niche that speaks to you. There are 18 million people in New York City. You can find 100 people who will be deeply moved by what you create. Don’t just latch onto a movement because it’s “the cool thing to do.” One thing you’ll learn very quickly about New Yorkers - they can always spot a fake!
