Verboten
Overview: While the world of electronic music is ever-expanding, Verboten created a name for itself long before it was a fixture in mainstream culture. The brand threw some of the best dance parties in New York, and last March they finally opened the doors to their first standalone venue across the street from the Wythe Hotel. The club is large and accommodating, with a straightforward decor centered around a large disco ball, but it really only focuses on what counts: the music.
Location: Verboten, 54 N 11th St (Williamsburg)
Team: Jen Schiffer, John Perez
Insider's Scorecard: This is the place to be for electronic acts that are outside the mainstream but still palatable. One of the LCD Soundsystem offshoots, Museum of Love, just hosted a huge party, while Hercules & Love Affair and Classixx are slated for October. On the deeper side of things, of-the-moment NYC record label Safer At Night hosts a monthly party, and critically acclaimed artists like Daniel Avery and Tiga will be playing this fall.
