Forever kooky designer Betsey Johnson recently told Michael Musto that "Uptown is the new downtown." Sirio Maccioni and his son Mauro are putting that theory to work tonight at 11pm as they open up their famed, very uptown restaurant Le Cirque to late night crowds that previously claimed nosebleeds upon crossing to the wrong side of 14th Street.-
Mauro has brought acclaimed fashion photographer Morgan Miller aboard to curate the Friday night shindigs. A late night bash on Halloween served as a trial run. Over 700 guests donned costumes that might have inspired conniptions among the restaurant's staid dinner crowd. The Maccionis hope the nocturnal festivities come to recall "the heyday of The Stork Club, El Morocco and Copacabana," by bringing some much needed fresh blood to an area long-neglected by party people.
If tonight's lineup--a birthday bash for Miller hosted by Ralph Lauren model Philippe Reynaud and socialite Alexander Forbes (yeah, that Forbes)-- is any indication, the Friday fetes are well on their way to that goal. But don't worry about Le Cirque losing its bearings. Its acclaimed food will be served to the late night set when the restaurant unveils a new bar menu in the coming weeks.
