Madoff
Once an Oracle of The Upper East Side, if you will, it seems everyone plus their rich aunt lost their money to the Ponzi scheme of "financier" Bernie Madoff. The revelation of his false business tore his family apart, hounded daily by a pack of press who were skeptical of their supposed lack of involvement or knowledge of the hedge fund heist.
With both of his sons shortly passing away following his conviction - one to suicide, and one to cancer - the only relative still carrying that loaded surname is his wife, Ruth. Her life to many seems that of an exile these days. whereas daughter in law Stephanie, who since changed her last name, has seemed to recover a wonderful life for herself and her children regardless of the Madoff stamp.
