She Launched Her Own Ballet
A lifetime love for music and dance led to her becoming a patron of the ballet. After an initial sponsorship of legendary dancer and choreographer Robert Joffrey's dance company (which ended because he refused to perform her works), Harkness launched her own namesake ballet company run out of a headquarters in an Upper East Side townhouse. More so than any of its performances, it was known for failing spectacularly, costing Harkness nearly $40 million. Hey, at least she tried?
