Brearley's Response

Listen, it's one thing to write something like this on your personal blog (or better yet, in the journal you show your therapist every week), but the fact that Gutmann took the time to type it out and mail it directly to people's homes has, obviously, alarmed the school's community.

In response, Brearley's headmistress, Jane Fried, wrote an email to parents saying, "Many have written to say that they found the opinions expressed in the letter to be deeply offensive and harmful, and we agree."

"I and others who work closely with Upper School students met with more than one hundred of them, many of who told us that they felt frightened and intimidated by the letter and the fact that it was sent directly to their homes."

Fried added that the school expresses "unequivocal support for our Black, Asian, Indigenous, Multiracial and Latinx students, faculty, staff, and alums."
