The Gathering
The Venue: The "caterer" who hosted the monthly dinner was responsible for selecting a venue that was exclusive, elite, and most importantly, secret. Many times, the event was at the
Union Club, The
Metropolitan Club,
Delmonico's, Sherry's, or their private homes.
Dinner Cost: As a New York Sun article detailed in 1894, cost was no object for these dinners. The members gorged on multiple courses of French cuisine and wine. There liquor tab included the Mouton Rothschild 1878 (estimated to cost $2,185 a bottle from one of the finest Bordeaux region's crop) and the Chateau Haut-Brion 1881, rated a
Premier Cru Classé.
