Cops are in riot gear. Kids are dancing. Everyone's smoking pot. In Washington Square Park, it feels more like a return to the Swinging Sixties than the Roaring Twenties these days. Or, should we say, nights.
While the Greenwich Village epicenter has always been a mecca of sorts for the artists, rebels, and countercultural youth, the pent-up energy stemming from a year of protests and pandemic lockdowns seems to have set the scene for massive after-dark ragers and combustible chaos beneath those storied arches. Needless to say, the pounding music, illicit activities, and incidents of violence have left the moneyed residents of the area less-than-pleased. But despite the eruption of complaints and resulting police clashes, organizers of the wild gatherings say they aren't backing down.
