Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California

Built to the specifications of media tycoon William Randolph Hearst between 1919 and 1947, the sprawling California estate is formerly known as "La Cuesta Encantada" (The Enchanted Hill). Through the 1920s and '30s, the 165-room home was a social hub, hosting the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, and even Winston Churchill.
