The Breakers, Newport, Rhode Island

The famous summer mansion (or "cottage" if you want to be totally ironic) of the Vanderbilt family is one of Newport's grandest sites. The 70-room Italian palazzo-style home was commissioned in 1893, inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin. Boasting a great hall, library, and lush gardens, the waterfront property certainly takes you on a trip to Europe.
