Inside Stephen Sondheim’s Charming, Historic Turtle Bay Townhouse

They certainly don't make them like this anymore...

Welcome to 246 East 49th Street, the townhouse of the late Stephen Sondheim, everything still in place as he enjoyed it, making it thus a Mecca of sorts for musical theatre enthusiasts.

The historic home is one of the twenty that make up Turtle Bay Gardens, a charming residential enclave created in 1920 from a collection of 1860’s townhouses that's been home to everyone from Katharine Hepburn to Robert Gottlieb.

The 7-bedroom and 3.5-bath pad features a host of gorgeous details. Floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows, dramatic wood arches, period moldings.

Of course, as one would expect from Sondheim, it's the music studio that sits at the heart of this home, a delightfully moody and academic feeling space (the black paint is a real vibe!) with access to a 30-foot terrace overlooking the community's private communal garden.

The composer's exciting property is currently on the market for $7 million. Curious to tour the rest of the space?
