Penelope: The Atmosphere
Price: On this particular Saturday, we headed to
Penelope in Murray Hill. Murray Hill, so I’m told, is a bit of a faux paus, as far as neighborhoods go, as it is filled with New York City newbies fresh out of college or fresh off the plane—either way, they’re new to the big city. That being said, it’s convenient to everything else in the city, and affordable—all things being relative—to live there. This certainly applies to its brunch spots, with Penelope—billed as “Nine Years of Comfort in Murray Hill”—coming in at the top with a brunch deal that boasts a whopping $15 price tag.
That’s right, fif-teen, not fif-ty. Wowza.
Atmosphere: Penelope is a charming, shabby-chic cottage nestled smack in the middle of New York. It’s more reminiscent of a restaurant you’d find in Charleston, Savannah or Naples, Florida, rather than the Big Apple. While at first this decor and ambiance seems wildly out of place, it grows on you, and I can see Penelope becoming a favorite place for much-needed respite.
