While in some small, slow ways the world seems to be returning to normal, as a whole we've very far to go. And one of the biggest industries still suffering each and every day is the restaurant industry.
The latest, most unfortunate news to be added to the long list of the city's closures comes from Soho hot spot West~Bourne. More than just their delicious "accidentally vegetarian" menu, the restaurant centered on kindness and community.
Through a partnership with the Robin Hood Foundation, a portion of every purchase made at West~Bourne directly benefited the non-profit, whose mission is to invest in effective ways to fight poverty. And as for the environment, the local gem was a trailblazer in the New York City food industry with their commitment to being zero waste.
This evening will be their final for those wishing to bid what is hopefully a temporary farewell to but the restaurant's first chapter.
View this post on Instagrama few years ago we had the idea to reimagine what a restaurant can be. one that cared for its neighborhood first, fervently recognized the value of its team, appreciated the power of investing in the local community, and dreamed about leaving our planet healthier for the next generation. we found our home on a perfect block, sullivan street tucked between prince and houston. that’s where west~bourne began. for two and a half years, we’ve had the privilege to cook for our neighbors and visitors alike. throughout, we’ve supported our community, working with nonprofit partners to develop talent and create viable career paths. we’ve become the city’s first TRUE certified zero waste restaurant, we’ve partnered with small california winemakers to bring their craft to new york, and we’ve been so inspired by seeing our impact grow. given the difficult reality of this pandemic, west~bourne will close its doors to 137 sullivan street on saturday. the reality for restaurants in the wake of covid-19 is extensively trying and has presented us with challenges we've not been able to work around. this decision is heart-wrenching. it is the last thing we wanted. we’re longing for the simple pleasures of serving your morning coffee, bumping into strangers while having a glass of wine and the buzz of friends gathering over brunch. we will miss you, our neighbors, terribly. however, when one door closes, there’s always an open window. while we’ll no longer be on this block, we’ll take care of you through our annex goods and offsite catering, in the name of coming together to eat and drink well, and do even better. our commitments to donate 1% of all sales to @door_nyc via @robinhoodnyc to care for the planet and to handle our community with care were ideatead on day one and they will remain at our core, through thick and thin. we are still here for you. we’ve got your back. please join us for a final celebration this week, from 4-8pm on thurs + fri for some of your all~day classic favorites, bottles of cali wine and plenty of air hugs. together we can, and will, continue to grow our impact, 〰️ @camilla.marcus + the @westbourne team
