What’s the philosophy behind Salon 21?
Alex Bass: Salon 21 (a “salon” of the 21st century) is inspired by the salons of the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe in which people would gather in someone’s living room and discuss the newest art and fashions of the time. I read a book called The Art of Rivalry about different friendships between infamous artists, and how these salons were crucial to their growth and success. I feel that today we lack a physical space in which we can share ideas, create connections, and collaborate; Salon 21 is trying to fill that void.
