Seriously? The N-Word?
The fashion world still has a lot of work to do when it comes to social awareness and recognizing and dismantling its own inherent racism. But last year's controversy surrounding Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko and her friend, street style star and editor Miroslava Duma, was really inexcusable. During couture week in Paris, Duma posted an Instagram story featuring a note from Sergeenko, which read "To all my n***** in Paris," an invite to her Paris show. Folks were quick to call out both Duma and Sergeenko, with everyone from Bryanboy to Naomi Campbell expressing their shock and disgust. Following the backlash, both apologized, but Duma was removed from the board of The Tot, a children's clothing company she co-founded in 2015.
