Thursday, Up&Down celebrated Timo Weiland’s graduation from incubation with a raucous party, which was well under way when we arrived at what we thought was the early hour of midnight. DJ Ben Brock supplied the downstairs dance floor with a steady diet of rock and nothing else! It’s worth noting that rock is officially taking back significant ground in the New York nightlife landscape. While no one’s gone after EDM with the same vehemency that disco was when it was
declared deceased in 1979, with the big business-ification of dance music we've seen in the past few years, we wouldn't be surprised if that backlash isn't far off. Anyway, Ben not only delivered a solid rock set but the best preemptive request denial we've heard in a long time; when this Murray Hill-looking girl came up to the booth he just leaned over before she could even say anything and said firmly "I’m not allowed to play any music you would like."
